Dynamic Stabilisation of the Hip & Pelvis

Course Overview.

This course will present evidence for the importance of:

  • Specificity of muscle recruitment

  • Targeted retraining of deep hip musculature to enhance joint protection and optimise movement patterns

  • Adequate progression to strength based training and tasks involving multidirectional control of movement

  • Choosing exercise type and position that is consistent with that of a muscle’s inherent function

This course will question commonly prescribed exercises;

  • Are they targeting the muscles you think they are?

  • Could they actually be setting up your patient for long term joint damage?

The one day practical seminar is composed of 3 major parts;

  • The first will cover assessment of muscle function through functional assessment and specific muscle tests.

  • The second practical session will involve both assessment and recruitment strategies for the deep hip musculature – iliacus, gluteus minimus, and the deep hip external rotators using real time ultrasound visualisation. Please note however that it is not a pre-requisite to have workplace access to real time ultrasound (RTUS). RTUS will be used as an advanced teaching tool.

  • The final practical session will cover targeted muscle strengthening and higher level functional retraining for optimal lumbopelvic, hip and lower limb control.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe key elements required for optimal pelvic control

  • Detail stability mechanisms for the hip & pelvis

  • Define functional roles of the musculature surrounding the hip & pelvis

  • Determine the most appropriate exercise approach for an individual, using clinical reasoning strategies that consider type & stage of pathology; minimization of negative joint loading & optimisation of muscle recruitment in a manner that is consistent with the natural function of the target muscles.

Participants will also gain online access to;

  • 4 hours of PowerPoint lectures with printable notes containing;

  • Detailed review of functional anatomy of hip & pelvic musculature.

  • Changes in muscle function associated with joint pathology & unloading.

  • Implications for prescription of therapeutic exercise.

  • Online forum for discussion.

  • Self-assessment quiz

          About Dr Alison Grimaldi

With 25 years of clinical experience and particular expertise in the management of hip, groin and lumbo-pelvic pain and dysfunction, Alison is Principal Physiotherapist at Physiotec and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Queensland.

Alison has a special interest in the assessment and optimisation of lumbo-pelvic and lower limb biomechanics for running, change of direction and all weightbearing sports, aiming to maximize an athlete’s performance outcomes and minimize risks of injury or re-injury.

Alison has published a number of papers in scientific journals, is a visiting lecturer at Masters level at Queensland University and has also conducted workshops for physiotherapy teams working with high performance sport at the Australian Institute of Sport and High Performance Sport New Zealand.

It is one of Alison’s core beliefs that research should be relevant to clinical practice. She is committed to sharing the knowledge she has gained in over 25 years of practice, so that other therapists can transfer this knowledge into their clinical practice as quickly as possible.
